listening to the walls
2015, Agency.ArtRu
"Sometimes life feels like aimless wandering through a maze.
Walls all around. Roughly put together, dilapidated walls.
And a hum — an unceasing heap of sounds coming from those walls.
Somewhere out there, life is passing by. I can hear it. Sometimes you manage to listen in, to extract something coherent. Someone is speaking. Maybe it's my friend. Or maybe I don't know him.
Sometimes you stumble upon a breach in the wall. You can peek through it: small fragments of life passing without me. And yet I feel their importance.
Perhaps someone was here before me — scraped this hole in the hope of seeing, or of telling someone something. Or maybe he did it for me. It doesn't matter now. What matters is that I'm here. I can hear. I can look."

Listening to the Walls is an artistic project by Ivan-David kadaner that sets up a dialogue between a person and their own self within an information-saturated space. The artist constructs a multidimensional field of perception: a large-scale installation — a system of plywood walls — engages both sight and touch. The viewer navigates the maze, repeatedly meeting its obstacles and encountering images that hover equally between reality and fiction.
In parallel, a multichannel sound installation leads the viewer onward, snatching from the surrounding world fragments of scattered messages. In the listener's mind they can assemble into a coherent text — a text that, passed through the prism of personal experience, acquires meaning only for that listener.
Activating the senses one by one, the artist goes further, ultimately turning to the sense of time in the video Loop goes here, needle coming through. The study undertaken there is not merely the experience of an outside observer, accidentally cast into the Russian provinces, where time seems not to exist at all; it is an attempt to outline the contours of a link between an unresolved past and an unfinished present — a link that, like fabric knitted on needles, eventually forms the pattern of a unique individual being.
